Nihongo

— sound hints

Most kanji are a meaning part plus a phonetic part that predicts the 音 reading: kanji containing 青 tend to read . Spot the component, guess the reading. The rule holds when the component is doing the sound job — usually the right-hand side (晴・清・精). When it's just a shape in the drawing (旅's 方), it says nothing — those are dimmed, so you learn where the trick applies. 41 of 82 here follow their family's sound (voiced variants like ハン→バン count — that shift is normal inside a family).
